Ark Nova
In response to Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami, the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ARK NOVA was envisioned by the Swiss LUCERNE FESTIVAL under artistic director Michael Haefliger as a pioneering effort to bring music to affected regions, uplifting spirits through art. This vision called for a mobile concert hall capable of traveling with the orchestra to disaster-hit areas. Realized through the collaboration of Arata Isozaki and Anish Kapoor, and developed from concept into reality by our firm, ARK NOVA embodies resilience and cultural renewal.
The mobile concert hall, crafted from an innovative pneumatic structure, symbolizes renewal and hope, inspired by the concept of Noah’s Ark. This air-inflated membrane structure seats 500 and is designed for ease of transport, allowing it to bring music and the arts directly to communities in need. Beyond its architectural innovation, ARK NOVA exemplifies community-centered design in post-disaster contexts, creating spaces that foster healing, empowerment, and cultural continuity.
2011年の東日本大震災の被災地に音楽を届け、芸術を通じて心を癒すことを目的に、芸術監督ミヒャエル・ヘフリガー率いるスイスのルツェルン・フェスティバルが構想したプロジェクトが「ルツェルン・フェスティバル・アーク・ノヴァ」である。この構想の具現化に伴い、オーケストラとともに被災地を巡る移動式コンサートホールが求められ、磯崎新と英国人彫刻家アニッシュ・カプーアのコラボレーションによって実現した。
革新的な空気圧構造で作られたこの移動式コンサートホールは、ノアの方舟のコンセプトから着想を得ており、文化の再生と希望を象徴している。500席を擁するホール空間を形作る膜構造体は空気で膨らみ、公演後は空気を抜いてコンテナに収めることで容易に移動できるよう設計されている。これにより、音楽と芸術を各地に直接届けることが可能となった。アーク・ノヴァは、建築的な革新性だけでなく、災害後の状況におけるコミュニティ中心のデザインの模範であり、癒しと復興の力をもたらし、文化の継続性を育む空間を創り出している。
